Queen Noor of Jordan: Duchess of Cambridge could be an inspiration 22 Nov But in King Hussein’s mind the ideal of a universal Hashemite monarchy persisted, taking the form of a benign authoritarianism that drew legitimacy from Islam and the traditional values of the desert Arab. Hussein ibn Talal was born on November 14 , in his parents’ villa in Amman, in what was then the Emirate of Transjordan. His family’s circumstances were modest. Though heir to the throne, his father, Talal ibn Abdallah, supported his family of three sons and a daughter on an allowance of pounds 1, a year.
Hussein received his primary education at schools in Amman and then at 13 was sent to Victoria College, Alexandria, an Egyptian boarding school on the British model. He recalled repairing his school uniform with a needle and thread to spare his parents the expense of replacing it. In , Transjordan was granted independence from Britain, partly in recognition of the contribution of the country’s British-led army, the Arab Legion, towards the Allied war effort.
Abdallah’s title was changed from Emir to King. King Abdallah was disappointed by Talal who suffered from schizophrenia and pinned his hopes instead on his favourite grandson. He took charge of Hussein’s education and instructed him in statecraft. One of the principles that Hussein learned from his grandfather was that the state of Israel, which had come into being in , was determined to survive at all costs. Rather than imagine – as did most Arab leaders – that Israel would be wiped off the map in due course, King Abdallah believed that Jordan had to come to terms with it.
The same principle guided Hussein throughout his reign.

The story of the first source comes straight out of the pages of a spy thriller. The source, Murray was informed, hated Saddam who had murdered his brother, and now seemed prepared to do business. What made him even more attractive to Murray and the White House was that he had no blood on his hands and had never been accused of any involvement in murders or criminal activity.
The French suggested an intermediary, an Arab former journalist living in Paris, who had known the source for many years. They told Murray that he had worked with them for a number of years. In the early summer of , the financial bargaining began. The intermediary did not come cheap. His starting price was a staggering one million dollars.
With the down payment agreed, Murray submitted a detailed list of questions for the intermediary to put to him. WMD were top of the list. Naji Sabri was then to report back to Murray. That was the deal.

Jerash, “Pompeii of the East” Hadrian’s Triumphal Gate marking the entrance to the city I was recently asked to produce a short essay on the ruined ancient city of Jerash. As I consulted my notes and files I discovered that I’d never even posted one on my blog. In order to correct that omission I decided to post this today and hope you will enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed producing it.
Jerash is one of the most important, intact and best preserved cities of the Decapolis and is accepted as one of the finest examples of the Roman city in the East. It has managed to escape the destruction and looting some of the other historic sites have suffered. The somewhat misleading name derives from the extensive excavation and level of preservation, though Jerash was never buried by a volcano. Excavation of some of the outer walls has led to the discovery of tools and machinery from as far back as the late Iron Age and the Bronze Age.
This city has gone by many names, one of which is Gerasa, taken from the Semite Gersho and was mentioned in Nabataean writings in Petra. The ten cities were not an official league or political unit, but they were grouped together because of their language, culture, location, and political status. Each city had a certain degree of autonomy and self-rule. The impressive buildings include places of worship dating from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and early Muslim periods.
In 63 BCE Pompey conquered the Decapolis cities and left Jerash as a prestigious semi-autonomous state as part of the province of Syria.
